Montessori is a philosophy and method of education developed by Dr. Maria Montessori.  The idea behind its philosophy is to lead children and also to help acquire a sound background for academic and creative skills and interests.

Parents should understand that a montessori school is a unique cycle of learning designed to take advantage of the child's sensitive years when he or she can absorb information from an enriched environment.  A child who acquires the basic skills of reading and mathematics in this natural way has the advantage of beginning his or her education without boredom or discouragement.  By pursuing their individual interests in a montessori classroom, he or she gains an early enthusiasm for learning which is the key to his becoming a truly educated person.

History of Montessori
Dr. Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. Through her observations and trial and error, she developed a system for the education of children from infancy through their teenage years. The focus of this system is the development of materials, educational techniques and observations which support the natural development of children.

Children are encouraged to "learn how to learn," thus gaining independence and self-confidence.

The Montessori curriculum works through hands-on materials which engage and encourage the child in understanding of concepts before they are committed to memory.
